What is Hyperbaric Therapy (HBOT) and Applications
HBOT is a treatment modality in which a patient breathes 100% oxygen while inside a treatment chamber at a pressure higher than sea level pressure ( one atmosphere) This then leads to specific therapeutic physiological effects. Breathing 100% oxygen at one atmosphere (as commonly happens in many hospital situations) is not considered hyperbaric in nature or effect.
Administration of HBO
HBO can be administered in either a monoplace or a multiplace chamber.
MONOPLACE CHAMBERS allow the administration of oxygen to a single patien
oxygen flows to compress the room environment. It is usually in the form of a cylinder of 60-90 centimeters in diameter with acrylic walls to allow better inspection of the patient and to minimize claustrophobia felt by the patient.
Sophisticated hyperbaric iv pumps, ventilators and monitoring equipment located external to the monoplace chamber require experienced operators.
Multiplace chambers (like our own ) are compressed with air and the patient breathes oxygen through specialized masks.
has the advantage of accommodating several patients as well as the attendant staff at the same time, also therapeutic support such as ventilators, IV fluids can be maintained with relative ease by the attending staff. Physicians and nurses can also be compressed with the patient to provide appropriate medical attendance when needed.Transfer of materials into and out of the chamber can be done through a pressure lock (medical lock).
